UFC's Dana White: Conor McGregor vs. Cowboy Cerrone Not 'Even Close' Amid Rumors

"We have nothing done, nothing is even close to being done. So, I hate to even talk about this stuff and say it because it might not happen...it might happen. But, we're looking at Cowboy."
For his part, Cerrone is itching to fight McGregor, per TMZ Sports, telling the ex-UFC champion to "sign the damn deal":
McGregor has a 21-4 professional MMA record, with his last fight occurring against Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title. He lost that Oct. 6, 2018, fight and was eventually suspended for six months for his part in a post-match brawl.
The 31-year-old is ranked third in UFC's lightweight rankings and once held the promotion's featherweight and lightweight belts.
Cerrone, ranked fifth on the lightweight list, has a 36-13 record (one no-contest). He's lost his last two fights to No. 1 contender Tony Ferguson and No. 4 lightweight Justin Gaethje. Prior to his two-match losing streak, Cerrone had won three straight.
The 36-year-old is a six-time UFC Fight of the Night winner.
Per Oddschecker, a few sportsbooks are already offering odds on the fight despite it not being official. McGregor is the early -200 favorite ($200 bet to win $100) at most books

VIDEO | UFC drops first promo for Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone fight

With UFC 246 is in the rear-view mirror, the next pay-per-view on the promotion’s calendar is UFC 246, which will be topped by a dynamite welterweight scrap between former two-division champion Conor McGregor and fan favorite contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
During the broadcast for Saturday’s UFC 246 card, the UFC dropped its first official promo for this anticipated McGregor vs. Cerrone fight, and it definitely serves its intended purpose.
By the time it’s over, you’ll be counting the days to January 18. See it below

UFC 246 McGregor vs Cerrone

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC246)

Conor McGregor has not fought since October of 2018, when he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in a bid to reclaim the UFC lightweight title. His next most recent fight before that was a blockbuster boxing match with undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather Jr., while his second most recent MMA fight occurred all the way back in 2016, when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to claim the lightweight belt. Because he still held the UFC featherweight belt at the time, this made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes simultaneously. He’s 21-4 in MMA competition.

Cerrone, on the other hand, is coming off a pair of stoppage losses to top lightweight contenders Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson. Prior to that, he rattled off back-to-back wins over lightweight contenders Al Iaquinta and Alexander Hernandez. Cerrone holds the UFC records for most wins and most finishes. He’s 36-13 overall.
UFC 246 will go down inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to this McGregor vs. Cerrone fight, it will feature appearances from fighters like Holly Holm and Anthony Pettis.
Here’s the full UFC 246 fight card as it currently stands (via MMA Weekly):
  • Conor McGregor vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone
  • Anthony Pettis vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira
  • Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington
  • Andre Fili vs. Sodiq Yusuff
  • Roxanne Modafferi vs. Maycee Barber
  • Nasrat Haqparast vs. Drew Dober
  • Grant Dawson vs. Chas Skelly
  • Aleksei Oleinik vs. Maurice Greene
  • Tim Elliott vs. Askar Askarov
  • Brian Kelleher vs. Ode Osbourne

“The Motown Phenom” made his welterweight debut in May against former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and lost via fourth round submission. This week, he announced his return to lightweight, claiming the 170-pound division has “gotten a little stagnant.”

Fans may be biting on the BMF belt that Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz will be fighting for in the UFC 245 headliner on Nov. 2 in New York, but Anthony “Rumble” Johnson is not.
Johnson has teased a possible UFC return, particularly eyeing a heavyweight bout with current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, but has also entertained the idea of fighting top heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou. If he does return, Johnson wants nothing to do with fake belts.

“If I’m gonna fight for a title, it’s only gonna be for the title that’s gonna count, and that’s the heavyweight title. I don’t want these fake ass BMFs,” Johnson told MMA Junkie recently.
“At the end of the day, they’re going to say the Bad Motherf—er is supposed to be the champion, right? It’s imaginary. It’s trash.”

Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal will be fighting to see who is the true BMF of the UFC at UFC 245, but that isn’t the only good fight of the night. Loaded with great fights, the whole card will be worth a watch. Here’s a quick rundown of #UFC244.

Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal will fight at UFC 245 for the right to hold the inaugural "Bad Mother Free belt.

WHERE IS UFC 245 Live?

UFC 245 is being held at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
It will be the fourth time the UFC has held an event at MSG after it debuted at the historic fight venue in 2016 with the UFC 205 showdown between then-lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor.
The following year, Michael Bisping lost his middleweight title to Georges St-Pierre, and in 2018, Daniel Cormier earned a slick second round win over Derrick Lewis for the heavyweight title.

HOW TO WATCH UFC 245 IN New York

As per usual, UFC 245 will be shown on Main Event.
You can also get a UFC 245 stream via Fight Pass

With no real belt on the line, the UFC made the entire main card of UFC 245 the most stacked card in a long time. Every single fight on this main card is probably going to be a great fight.

The first fight on the main card will feature Johnny Walker. He’ll get his next big test against Corey Anderson, who’s a great wrestler. Walker’s been on an amazing run so far and if he beats Anderson, then he can expect to fight for the title next.
After that is Derrick Lewis and Blagoy Ivanov. They’re both heavyweights so expect to see a knockout. Lewis is also a funny guy, so be sure to watch his interview if he wins.
Next up is a fight between Stephen Thompson and Vicente Luque. Luque is a rising star who’s knocked out or choked-out the vast majority of his opponents. Thompson is a veteran kickboxer who’s knocked out many men in his long career. This will not only be a great fight between two heavy-hitters, but it’ll also be Luque’s test to see if he’s ready for a title shot.
The co-main event of the night will be between Kelvin Gastelum and Darren Till. Both men fought at a lighter weight class before moving up to middleweight, and now the two knockout artists will see who can hurt the other one the most

After Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) failed to come to terms with Colby Covington to fight its Welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, in UFC 245’s main event next month, the promotion turned to Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. Indeed, the two men will headline the pay-per-view (PPV) card, which takes place inside Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y., on Nov. 2, 2019, and the victor will walk away with the “baddest motherf*cker” belt worth a cool $50,000. Meanwhile, many have come out mocked the promotion for wasting its time and efforts on a ”little boys” belt.
Then there’s fighters like Usman, who feels UFC picked two of the worst possible fighters to compete for the “BMF” title, claiming their win/loss records indicate they are the furthest thing from “bad motherf*ckers.”
He said as much during a recent media day (via ESPN).

Diaz (20-11) and Masvidal (34-13) actually have 24 combined defeats. “The Nigerian Nightmare,” meanwhile, sports a nearly-mint record of 15-1, 10-0 UFC.
Unsurprisingly, Covington feels the same way, saying Diaz and Masvidal are nothing but journeymen not worthy of true title shots. Still, despite many mocking UFC’s decision, the showdown between the two top-ranked Welterweights is as intriguing as it gets. Furthermore, the winner will likely earn himself a shot at the 170-pound title, which will be defended on Dec. 14, 2019, as Covington will finally take on Usman in UFC 245’s main event in Las Vegas, Nevada

The undisputed UFC middleweight title will be on the line on October 5 (October 6 local time) when 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker faces unbeaten interim titleholder Israel Adesanya in the main event of UFC 244 at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

Tickets for UFC 244, which airs live on pay-per-view, go on sale on August 16. More information: UFC com/Melbourne
Australia's Whittaker has been sidelined since the second of two epic battles with Yoel Romero, but this fall he gets his chance to cement his place as the best middleweight in the world when he takes on New Zealand's Adesanya, who is coming off wins over Anderson Silva and Kelvin Gastelum.

The event will be the fourth that the promotion has contested in Melbourne and second at the venue, following UFC 193 in November of 2015 A UFC Middleweight Championship title unification bout between current champion Robert Whittaker and interim champion Israel Adesanya is expected to serve as the event's headliner

Robert Whittaker is, and always has been, unapologetically himself.

The UFC middleweight champion is set in his ways — singularly-focused on becoming the best mixed martial artist he can be, while still remaining true to what he believes in.
There are never any extras with Whittaker. No trash talk. No drama.

He knows he could probably make more headlines and more money if he went there. He also knows there are more important things, like being a role model to his kids.
So with less than two months until his blockbuster unification bout with interim champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 244 in Melbourne, Whittaker has just one motivation.
Get in the Octagon, and get to work.

All will be settled October 6 (AEST).

This will be Whittaker’s third scheduled title defence on home soil. At both UFC 221 and UFC 234 he was forced to pull out under freak circumstances. It was disappointing for all involved, but no one took it harder than the 28-year-old.
“I felt worse than anybody else out there,” Whittaker told foxsports.com.au . “I was the one that felt gutted the most, because I felt like I didn’t fight, I didn’t do my job.”
“I did weeks leading up. A lot of people were riding on me to fight, to come watch, to come support and I didn’t get to do it. I am the one feeling the worst.”
And while UFC 244 provides Whittaker an opportunity to make it up to a Melbourne crowd that missed him in February, the location really didn’t matter: “I didn’t care whether it was in Vegas, in Sydney, in a carpark; I just want to get in there and get to work.
“So I owe the Melbourne crowd a show, and they’re going to get a show in October, and it’s going to be on a bigger scale, and I am pumped for that.”
Having interviewed Whittaker countless times over the past few years, his message — and maybe more importantly, the application of that message — has been unrelenting: Nothing can, or will, derail him.
He doesn’t pay attention to the rubbish, or add to it. He simply does his own thing, and believes that should be enough. While he’s on top — and he’s on a nine-fight win streak in the UFC 244 — that is enough.

“They say stuff that I should be concerned about that I’m not concerned about,” Whittaker said.
“And … you shouldn’t be worried about it more than I am. It shouldn’t be playing on your mind more than it plays on mine.
“Another big thing is, there’s a big wide world out there apart from fighting. When I’m not in the Octagon or on the mats, I’m doing a lot of other stuff. I’ve got a lot of other things I’m doing that I focus on, that I enjoy doing. I don’t spend the whole day on my phone worrying about what people are talking about. It’ll drive you mad.”
It’s an important distinction that sets Whittaker apart from many other fighters in the organisation, who are unwilling, or unable, to think outside of the cage.
“I have a great circle of guys that I work with outside of the fight scene,” Whittaker explained. “I have multiple businesses that I’m running at the [same] time.”
It’s simple, really: “I look forward to really capitalising on my prime years now. I don’t want to be [like] the guys who fight late in to their 30s. I don’t want to be that guy.
“I’m going to capitalise on my prime years now, make the most of everything that I can. Like honestly run myself through the ringer and just really hit it hard. And when it’s done it’s done, and I’ll move to other endeavours.”
Whittaker added: “I’ve put a deadline on myself. I don’t want to fight past 34 or 35. I will be looking to wrap things up around then, like regardless of how I feel. Just because I do not want to fight past 35, that’s just me.”
“... I want to be able to help my kids with their homework, like as they’re growing up.”
Those other endeavours involve the running of his Gracie Jiu Jitsu gyms, on top of a growing interest in getting his voice out there.
“We’re running a podcast at the moment. You know, Grange TV — shout out,” Whittaker joked.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying that. I think that has a lot of legs that will push me through. It’s fun working on it, it’s growing at a steady rate. I guess honestly it’s showcasing my skillset in a public speaking sort of venue.
“I’m also doing a speaking tour later this year after the fight, which I’m pumped to do. Again, to move into that public speaking sort of avenue . So, I have skillsets there that I think if you’re interested, people can see the skillsets.
“…. I’m not limited to just fighting, fortunately enough. I do have other skillsets and talents, and other avenues that I look to capitalise on now, but especially after the fight scene wraps up.”
But that ‘fight scene’ is a world away from wrapping up. And it continues on October 6 (AEST) against a star in Adesanya, who has risen up the UFC rankings at a ridiculous rate.
A rate that has seen the Nigerian-born Kiwi finally tested in his past two Octagon appearances; first against Anderson Silva, and then against Kelvin Gastelum.

Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya went back-and-forth in Atlanta.

“That’s a big thing I think a lot of people don’t realise — Gastelum tagged him. He tagged him up well,” Whittaker said.
“It was a hard fight, Adesanya fought great, got the win. But he got tagged. And if Gastelum can tag him, I can tag him.
“I have better hands than Gastelum, I have more power, and I’m much faster. And on top of that, I have a better gas tank.
“I’ve been in those five-round wars. I went 10 rounds with Romero. I’m not going anywhere. I’m not taking anything away from Izzy [Israel]; I just know what I bring, and what I can bring.”
“… We’re eight weeks from the fight now … I’m fitter and stronger and sharper than I was fight week Gastelum.”
Forgotten just how good Whittaker really is?
No problem.
“They’ll remember me in October — that’s the way I see it,” Whittaker said.
“I’m the best I’ve ever been. I’m going to come in October, I’m going to put on a cracker show and everybody is going to remember, like, ‘Ah yeah, Rob Whittaker, I remember him. He’s not bad.’”

Since the establishment of UFC Russia last year, UFC cards are aired in Russia via Cable Vision, which operates under a monthly subscription service.
Another benefit to the Russian audience will be the fact that only one hour's time difference between Abu Dhabi and Moscow will mean a far more palatable start time for the card, as most events taking place in the United States begin around 3am in Russia's capital city.
Also on rt.com ‘Land of Warriors’: Welcome to Dagestan (Episode 1) A significant audience is expected to tune in to UFC 247 to see Nurmagomedov defend his title against the significant challenge that his opponent, Dustin Poirier, represents. That viewing figure could swell further if former champion Conor McGregor attends the event, as is rumored.

It remains to be seen if legal issues which have arisen as a result of footage of an April incident in a bar in Dublin will prevent his attending, and the Dagestani champ issued a stark warning to the Irishman.
"It will be more difficult to leave Abu Dhabi than New York," Nurmagomedov said last month. "Abu Dhabi is no place for show-offs. Let him come if he plans to come, but his shenanigans won't work there."

As mentioned, the UFC 239 ceremonial weigh-ins will follow that, with the card going down tomorrow night in Vegas. It will be headlined by a UFC light heavyweight title title fight between Jon Jones and Thiago Santos.

Daniel Cormier dropped jaws throughout MMA last summer by knocking out Stipe Miocic in the opening round at UFC 226. But, the heavyweight champ believes Miocic’s going to throw hands with an even better version of Cormier, when the fight later this summer.

Miocic has been tapped for a rematch with Cormier, which will headline UFC 241, August 10th in Anaheim. While the former champ Miocic hasn’t competed since his loss to Cormier, “DC” defended the heavyweight title in November, by submitting Derrick Lewis. Cormier had intended to fight sooner, but the former light-heavyweight champ had to undergo back surgery, following his win over Lewis.
Well, while discussing the upcoming fight recently, Cormier had this to say (quote via MMA Junkie):
“Ultimately, it’s always about winning the fight,” Cormier said. “Get the job done, but if there’s any way to improve, then try to improve. I mean, can I find a submission? Can I find a way to take advantage of the same type of mistake that he may have made prior?
“…I anticipate being a better version of myself,” Cormier said, while talking about his recovery and how his back felt when he faced Miocic the first time. “In the fight last year, there were many days where I was lumbering into practice, barely able to stand tall and now I’m walking around straight, I feel good daily. Every day I feel better. I feel physically better so I’d imagine that would lead to better results.”
It’s going to be really interesting to see how Cormier looks, and how Miocic approaches him this time around. Chances are we won’t see a dramatically different Miocic, as far as his style. After all, Miocic is one of the greatest heavyweights to date. But, one would think Miocic’s going to be much more aware if and when he has to engage Cormier in the clinch.
One thing is for certain, however; if Cormier can go out and finish Miocic again, his case for being the greatest heavyweight of all time will receive a substantial boost. If Miocic wins, could we see a rubber match?

Alberta’s Hakeem Dawodu is getting another fight close to home.

The Calgary native will fight Yoshinori Horie in a featherweight bout at UFC 240 on July 27 at Rogers Place in Edmonton, officials announced Thursday following an initial report by TSN.

This will be Dawodu’s second time fighting in Alberta and third time fighting in Canada. He has won his last two fights, defeating Kyle Bochniak at UFC 231 in Toronto and Austin Arnett at UFC on FOX 30 in Calgary. Dawodu is 2-1 in the UFC and 9-1-1 overall since turning pro in 2014.

Horie (8-1) is coming off of a sensational first-round finish of Hiroshige Tanaka at Pancrase 303 this past March.

The Japanese fighter has fought exclusively for Pancrase, so UFC 240 will mark his UFC debut. Five of his eight pro wins have come by way of knockout.

UFC 240 will be headlined by a featherweight title bout between champion Max Holloway and challenger Frankie Edgar.
